We are developing a range of chairs with plastic shells (used with a variety of bases) for an international furniture brand. I am interested to hear from reps and engineers with suggestions of innovative advanced polymers. This will be a high quality modern range that will sell into top commercial fit-outs.

The shell will be moulded in approximately 5mm wall sections and needs to be very strong as there are cantilevered arms. No gas-assist is involved in the moulding.

The surface will be high satin or gloss (not textured), opaque, and needs to be highly wear resistant. One can compensate for bad design by good materials and vice versa.
For an immediate solution to the problem I would try high flex homo and if not sufficient add fillers such as talc or glass fiber. While this would increase the price of the chair it will buy me time to perform a study of the mould and a DOA in order to solve the problem.

I am pleased to hear that the system you mention meet the quality requirements in the specific case. However, it is still true that Polyproylene resins will get a "chalked" surface after less than 100 kLy outdoor exposure - this is less than one year in the majority of all geographical areas in the world and it is still true that organic UV absorbers and primary antioxidants will not be able to protect the application surface.

For this task, the system will need a low molecular weight (LMW) HALS. If you have 20 - 40 % of mineral fillers, the actually you will not really need to have an organic UV absorber present as the fillers will screen of the harmful UV radiation. In addition to the LMW HALS though, you should consider an addition of a HMW HALS (as this besides the radical scavening effect for UV protection also provides LTHS (long term heat stability)), which LMW HALS cannot do.
