What is hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker?
The hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker is a specialized type of electrical protection device that combines overload protection and fault protection into a single mechanism, instead of using separate thermal and magnetic mechanisms for each function
Hydraulic circuit breakers are used for applications where thermal protection might not work correctly due to environmental conditions such as extreme temperature or moisture
Low temperatures might prevent thermal protection from tripping, while high temperatures might make it trip accidentally
For this reason, an alternative type such as the hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker is needed
As with all circuit breakers types, hydraulic magnetic breakers are available for a wide range of operational voltages of up to 240 volts and frequencies of both 50Hz and 60Hz
They are available in one, two and three-pole versions according to the type of circuit being protected
Current ratings of hydraulic-magnetic circuit breakers are typically below 100 amperes, which is comparable to miniature circuit breakers
Hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker working principle
Hydraulic magnetic circuit breakers provide both overload and fault protection with a single mechanism: solenoid coil is combined with a spring-loaded actuator inside cylinder filled with dampening fluid, hence the name of hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker
· For overload protection, the higher than normal current induces a magnetic field thanks to the solenoid coil
However, since overload current is only slightly higher than rated current, magnetic field is relatively weak and the actuator is dampened by the fluid, providing the required time delay
As the overload current increases in magnitude, so does the induced magnetic field and the time delay is shorter because the magnetic force can overcome the dampening effect more quickly
· For fault protection, the working principle is the same, but the extremely high current causes very strong magnetic field and the dampening effect is overcome instantly, providing immediate circuit interruption
Combined hydraulic-magnetic protection mechanism makes this type of breaker completely independent of temperature, unlike all types of thermal-magnetic breakers
