Outer tie rods provide a link between the steering knuckle and other steering components. On rack and pinion steering systems, outer tie rods are directly connected to an inner tie rod end. On steering box type systems, outer tie rod ends are connected to both the inner and outer pivot points of a linkage system, typically using adjusting sleeves.
