Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS for short. It delivers much greater measuring accuracy and is technically more sophisticated than DDS which is based purely on software. TPMS informs the driver about tire pressure deviations as low as +/- 0.1 bar, while DDS doesn't warn the driver until about 30% of tire pressure is lost.
TPMS consists of a wheel module with an integrated pressure/temperature sensor that is seated in the rim and connected to the wheel valve via a ball-joint clamp. This sensor, which operates stably within a temperature range of –40?C to +125?C and has a measuring range of 1.0 to 5.0 bar, measures the current tire pressure – with due consideration being given to the tire temperature – and detects the rotation of the wheel with the aid of a micromechanical centrifugal switch.
The tire pressure sensor logs into the TPMS receiver module via its serial number, thus enabling the module to identify clearly which signals are coming from which wheel. This excludes the possibility of error signals which can occur,
TPMS doesn't need an antenna in each wheel house or a central antenna beneath the vehicle floor in order to receive inflation pressure data. Nor does it need its own ECU (elec-tronic control unit). This means lower manufacturing and assembly costs, and increases the system's operational reliability since the TPMS data are directed straight into the electronic ABS/ESP controller via the already existing cable connection of the wheel-speed sensors
