Description of the bearing : 

The release bearing is a bearing fixed on the shaft going into the gearbox it is movable along it. It is operated when you push clutch pedal to floor and cause the clutch mechanism to operate thus stopping driving force from engine being carried through to gears. 
When a clutch friction disc is worn it can slip causing a nasty smell. This is a very 'clingy' and obnoxious smell of burnt material. 
Most clutches are self adjusting so w e don't tend to notice it needs replacing until we find we have to let pedal 'all' the way up before it then bites. if we find under hard acceleration engine revs blip or rise before car speed follows? Often with a burning smell.. This is a sure sign clutch is worn out.

Advantage of clutch bearing

Because the release bearing only works when the clutch is being released it usually lasts quite a long time. However, improper linkage adjustment or riding the clutch with your foot when driving can wear the bearing prematurely. Normally there should be a minimum of 1/16" clearance between the face of the bearing and the three release fingers or diaphragm spring of the pressure plate when the clutch is engaged. This fact is important and will be discussed further when we get to the part about setting up the clutch linkage.
